How to use the Wegovy pen: steps from the label, what the two clicks and yellow bar mean, where to inject, missed doses, storage, and what to do when it fails.

Written by Diana Gangan. Updated October 25, 2026.

Using the Wegovy pen takes about ten seconds: pull off the cap, press the pen firmly against your stomach, thigh or upper arm, hold it there through two clicks until the yellow bar in the window stops moving, then lift it off and throw the pen away. Each Wegovy pen holds exactly one dose, the needle is hidden and automatic, and there is nothing to dial or prime. The parts people get wrong are the ones the label mentions in passing: lifting the pen after the second click instead of waiting for the bar to stop, injecting into the same spot every week, and using a pen that has been out of the fridge too long.

This guide gives the steps from the official instructions for use, explains what the clicks and the yellow bar mean, and then answers the questions the manufacturer's page does not: what to do when the bar will not move, whether you can reuse a pen, how to handle a missed dose, and how to travel with it.

How to Use the Wegovy Pen: The Short Answer

    1. 1One pen = one dose. Four pens in a box = four weeks. Never reuse a pen.
    2. 2Inject once a week on the same day, any time, with or without food.
    3. 3Sites: front of the thigh, lower stomach (2 inches from the navel), or back of the upper arm. Rotate within the area.
    4. 4Steps: check the pen, clean the skin, pull the cap straight off, press firmly, listen for two clicks, keep pressing until the yellow bar stops (5 to 10 seconds), lift, dispose in a sharps container.
    5. 5Storage: fridge at 36°F to 46°F; up to 28 days at room temperature below 86°F in the carton. Never freeze.
    6. 6If the yellow bar never starts or stops early, do not inject again with another pen; call Novo Nordisk at 1-833-934-6891 or your pharmacist.

    What Is in the Box

A Wegovy carton contains four single-dose pens of the same strength: 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg, plus 7.2 mg for Wegovy HD since March 2026. Each pen is a prefilled autoinjector with a built-in needle covered by a shield; you never see or handle the needle. There are no separate needles to attach and no priming step, which is the main difference from the multi-dose Ozempic pen that uses the same drug. The strength printed on the pen is the dose you receive; you cannot dial more or less.

Step by Step, From the Label

    Using the Wegovy pen

    Step
    What to do
    Why it matters

    1. Check

Look through the window: liquid should be clear and colorless. Check the expiry date and that the pen is not damaged or already used (a used pen has a locked yellow bar).

Cloudy liquid or a frozen pen can be ineffective; do not use.

    2. Let it warm (optional)

If the pen came straight from the fridge, let it sit at room temperature 15 to 30 minutes with the cap on.

A cold injection stings more; warming is not required for the drug to work.

    3. Choose a site

Front of thigh, lower abdomen at least 2 inches from the navel, or back of upper arm. Avoid bruised, scarred, tender or stretch-marked skin.

You must be able to see the window during the injection.

    4. Clean

Alcohol swab or soap and water; let it dry.

    Reduces infection risk.

    5. Remove the cap

Pull it straight off. Do not twist and do not touch or push the needle cover.

Pushing the cover can trigger the pen early and waste the dose.

    6. Press and hold

Press the pen firmly and straight against the skin. The yellow bar starts to move and you hear the first click.

The pen activates only under firm pressure.

    7. Keep holding

A second click sounds during the injection. Keep pressing until the yellow bar stops moving, about 5 to 10 seconds.

Lifting after the second click is the most common cause of an incomplete dose.

    8. Lift and check

Lift the pen straight up. The yellow bar should have stopped and the window shows the bar (it does not fill the whole window).

A drop of blood is normal; press lightly with gauze.

    9. Dispose

Put the whole pen in an FDA-cleared sharps container or a heavy-duty closed plastic container. Not household trash.

The needle is inside the pen.

What the Clicks and the Yellow Bar Mean

Two clicks, one bar. The first click means the injection has started; the second means it is still going. Neither click means you are done. The only signal that the dose is complete is the yellow bar coming to a stop in the window. On the Wegovy pen the bar does not fill the entire window when finished, which confuses people who expect a full green bar as on some other pens. If you lift the pen while the bar is still moving, part of the dose stays in the pen and cannot be recovered.

Why the Yellow Bar Will Not Move

    1. 1Not pressing firmly enough: the pen needs steady pressure straight down against the skin. Press harder; do not wiggle.
    2. 2Pressing at an angle: hold the pen perpendicular to the skin.
    3. 3Needle cover was pushed before use: the pen may have activated in the air. It cannot be reused.
    4. 4Pen was frozen or is past expiry: do not use.
    5. 5The bar starts, then stops early: you may have received a partial dose. Do not take a second pen the same day. Call Novo Nordisk at 1-833-934-6891 or your pharmacy; keep the pen and packaging for the report.

Where to Inject, and Why Rotation Matters

Wegovy is injected under the skin, not into muscle. The three label sites are the front of the thigh, the lower abdomen (keep two inches from the navel) and the back of the upper arm, which usually needs another person. All three absorb the drug equally well. Rotate: you can use the same area every week, but move at least an inch from the last spot, because injecting repeatedly into one place causes lumps, bruising and patchy absorption. Many people alternate left and right thigh, or thigh one week and abdomen the next.

Does the Wegovy Pen Have Four Doses?

No. This is a common mix-up with Ozempic, whose multi-dose pen holds four or more doses, and with the new Zepbound KwikPen. Each Wegovy pen contains a single dose, and the box of four pens is a month's supply. Once the yellow bar has moved, the pen is empty and locked. Trying to reuse it delivers nothing.

    Missed or Late Dose

    1. 1Missed by 5 days or less: take the dose as soon as you remember, then resume your usual day.
    2. 2Missed by more than 5 days: skip it and take the next dose on the usual day. Do not double up.
    3. 3Missed two or more weeks in a row: call your prescriber; you may need to restart at a lower dose to avoid nausea.
    4. 4Changing your injection day: fine, as long as at least 48 hours separate two doses.

The full ladder from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg, and what to do at each step, is in the Wegovy dosing schedule.

    Storage and Travel

    1. 1Unopened pens: refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C), in the carton, away from the cooling element. Do not freeze; a frozen pen must be thrown away even after thawing.
    2. 2Out of the fridge: up to 28 days at 46°F to 86°F (8°C to 30°C), in the carton. After 28 days, discard.
    3. 3Travel: pens can fly in hand luggage at room temperature for up to 28 days; bring the prescription label. Do not check them in the hold, where temperatures can fall below freezing.
    4. 4Heat: never leave pens in a car or in direct sun.

Our guide to how long Wegovy can be out of the fridge covers edge cases such as power cuts and long trips.

Injection Side Effects and What Is Normal

A small red bump, mild bruising or a brief sting at the site are common and fade within a day or two; rotating sites and letting the pen warm up reduce them. The drug's own side effects, nausea, burping, constipation and tiredness, come from how semaglutide works rather than from the injection technique; see what Wegovy does in your body and does Wegovy make you tired. Call a doctor for spreading redness, warmth or pus at the site, a rash or hives, or swelling of the face or throat.

When to Talk to Your Doctor or Pharmacist

    1. 1Before your first injection, to have the steps demonstrated
    2. 2If the yellow bar stopped early and you are unsure whether you received the dose
    3. 3If you have missed two or more doses in a row
    4. 4If injection sites are repeatedly lumpy, painful or slow to heal
    5. 5If nausea or vomiting after injections prevents you from keeping fluids down

    The Bottom Line

The Wegovy pen is designed to be hard to get wrong: one dose, hidden needle, no priming, two clicks and a yellow bar. The rules that matter are to press firmly and hold until the bar stops, to rotate sites, to keep pens cold or under 28 days at room temperature, and never to reuse or double up. If a pen misbehaves, keep it and call Novo Nordisk rather than injecting another. For what to expect once the drug is in, see how long Wegovy takes to work.

    FAQ

Check the liquid is clear, clean the skin on your thigh, stomach or upper arm, pull the cap straight off, press the pen firmly against the skin, hold through two clicks until the yellow bar stops moving (5 to 10 seconds), lift, and dispose of the pen in a sharps container.

One. Each Wegovy pen is single-dose; a box holds four pens for four weekly injections. The pen locks after use and cannot be reused.

Until the yellow bar stops moving, usually 5 to 10 seconds. The two clicks mean the injection has started and is continuing, not that it is finished.

Press more firmly and straight down; the pen activates only under pressure. If the yellow bar still does not move, do not use another pen; call Novo Nordisk at 1-833-934-6891 or your pharmacist.

The front of the thigh, the lower stomach at least 2 inches from the navel, or the back of the upper arm. All absorb equally; rotate spots within the area each week.

Up to 28 days at room temperature below 86°F (30°C) in its carton. After that, or if it has been frozen, discard it.
